BIRKENHEAD ship repairer Cammell Laird has won the bid for annual maintenance of two high speed Super SeaCat ferries.
The contract with Sea Containers Irish Sea Operations is worth £3 million for the Merseyside economy.
The firm's Super SeaCat Three - which operates the Liverpool to Dublin route - is at Cammell Laird's dock number six for its first annual refit, including the overhaul of all life saving equipment, machinery and hull. The work is worth around £.5 million.
More significantly, Super SeaCat Two, which returns to the Irish sea to operate the Heysham-Belfast route in April, will have £2.5 million spent on upgrading at Cammell Laird.
The main priority of the work is to fit a T-Foil system to improve the craft's stability - work which will take around six weeks and cost £1.5 million.
Peter Reeman, technical manager for Super SeaCat, says: "Five firms across the UK and two Dutch yards tendered for this fast ferry contract, and Cammell Laird won because they offered the best deal in a highly competitive market.
"The investment by Sea Containers Irish Sea Operations shows a highly positive commitment to the north west economy and its ship repair industry."
