Riley sees off cup threat

From the Wirral Globe, first published Wednesday 12th Jan 2000.

Houlihans Birkenhead Sunday Football League round-up with Grahame Sutherland

THE Cheshire County FA Sunday Cup took centre stage.

Kel's 4-2 away win (Tony Lucas, Ian Gray, Paul Bishop, Graham Ellison) at Great Float kick-started their season in great style.

In the same competition, Queens Park led Carnforth 1-0 at half-time, thanks to a Mike Riley goal. And a goal of outstanding quality from fully 20 yards by the same player killed off a very good Carnforth outfit.

No joy for Archers Social, beaten 2-1 by Castrol. In the Houlihans Challenge Cup 4th round, Seven Stiles welcomed back prolific goal scorer Chris McGinn. He responded with a hat-trick in a 6-3 extra-time win over Rangers Breakes. Premier Division Parkdale (Stuart Forshaw, Jamie Gladwin) also went to extra time, before losing 3-2 at home to Brow FC.

Dock moved into the last eight, thanks to goals from Steve Platt and Paul McDonald in a 2-1 home win over St John's Celtic.

Colheart Cup holders Corsair Ath crashed out at home to Bowies 4-3 after extra time. Shelbourne/Evans trounced Black Horse 8-1, thanks to goals by Andy Johnson, 3, Steve Darcy, 2, Paul Jones, Gareth Owens and Kevin Ward.

Windmill AFC (Ian Redmond, 2, Steve Henshaw, Dave Harding) overcame a battling Carlton 4-3. Upton Celtic, despite a goal apiece off John Rogers and Peter Ennion, crashed out to a resurgent Civic Way, Zack Martin and Ian Carpenter, 2, getting their goals.
