Wirral pair 'conquered Everest first'

THE body of a Birkenhead man, who went missing 75 years ago, may hold the key to who first conquered the world's highest peak. Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine disappeared on Everest in 1924 with his partner George Mallory, whose father was vicar of St John's, Birkenhead. It was Mallory who, when asked why he wanted to climb Everest, famously said: "Because it's there". George Mallory's body was found at the weekend 2,000 feet below Everest's peak. The pair are confirmed to have been spotted 1,000 feet further up, so the position of Mallory's body would indicate that they were returning after reaching the summit. Search teams have found written evidence with Mallory that suggests the pair made it to the summit, but they are still looking for a camera he was carrying and which may be with Sandy Irvine's body. The record books show that New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepali Sherpa Tensing were the first to reach the 29,028 feet summit in 1953. Those record books could be re-written if it is proved that Irvine and Mallory achieved the same feat 29 years earlier. Irvine was 22 when he left his home in Park Road South for the Himalayas and Mallory, who moved to Birkenhead when he was eight-years-old, was 38.  more...
